BROTHERHOOD OF THE VERA CRUZ: THE CONTINUITY OF THE MAY CROSSES SINCE THE 16TH CENTURY

The origins of the Brotherhood of the Vera Cruz [“True Cross”] of Almonaster la Real can be traced back to time immemorial, and this is the first comprehensive study undertaken to explore its history. According to documents found in various historical archives, this brotherhood has existed since at least the 16th century. Through an analysis of the consulted documentation (both ecclesiastical and civil), it has been established that the brotherhood has maintained an uninterrupted presence for centuries. This research also explores the relationship between this brotherhood and the current “Brotherhood of the Vera Cruz del Llano”, suggesting a possible historical connection between the two. The results obtained indicate the importance of this brotherhood in local history and culture, and open up new lines of research to delve deeper into its origins and development.
