The May Cross Festival in Riaza, Segovia: The Revival and Adaptation of a Centuries-Old Tradition

This article examines the history and revival of the May Cross Festival in Riaza, Segovia. From the late 19th century until the 1940s, this celebration was characterized by rounds of young men, traditional dances, and the recitation and singing of ancient verses. Partially revived in 1989, the festival is now celebrated on May 1st with several changes. Through the review of hemerographic sources and fieldwork, information has been gathered about the origins, evolution, and current state of this festivity. The importance of preserving these traditions is highlighted in order to maintain cultural identity, as well as the role of the internet and social media in their conservation and dissemination. Furthermore, preservation measures are proposed to strengthen the digital presence of the festival and encourage cultural participation among younger generations.
