The Crosses and Mayos in the History of San Carlos del Valle (Ciudad Real)

Abstract

Since the Middle Ages to the present day, San Carlos del Valle has preserved various religious and popular expressions in honor of the Holy Cross and the Santo Cristo del Valle. The devotion to Saint Helena was the starting point of this tradition of venerating the holy cross, which was solidified with the appearance of the Santo Cristo del Valle. Among the notable celebrations are the singing of the Mayos, where locals sing in honor of the Holy Cross and Christ, and the dressing of crosses, a tradition in which streets and homes are adorned. These practices, which have endured to this day, reflect the deep popular religiosity and cultural identity of the current town.
